Fruit flowers define the flowers that grow a fruit, which in more technical terms is known as the ripened ovary which serves to protect the flowering plant in the early development stages.

What are fruit flowers?

Put simply, fruit flowers are those that produce a fruit.

Did you know that fruit is the mature ripened ovary of a flower?

The ovary serves to protect the ovules, from the youngest stages of flower development until the ovules become fertilized and turn into seeds.

In nature, when seeds are naturally dispersed, it means that more fruit flowers can grow in and around the original fruit flower.

When we think about fruit flowers, we may think of the classics such as strawberries, orange and apple trees, but there are so many other fruits that we may not immediately imagine when we think of fruit flowers.

For instance, apricots, grapes and bananas, corn, beans, grains, tomatoes and cucumber are classified as fruits, so are acorns and almonds. Classically, we think of the fruit bowl fruits when we think of fruit flowers such as mangoes and strawberries.

If you’re thinking about either growing or gifting fruit flowers, read on to find out everything you need to know about how to maintain them as well as the easiest fruit flowers you can grow in your garden.

What are the easiest fruit flowers to grow?

Growing fruit flowers isn’t as difficult as you may think! Most fruit flowers can start their development in containers and even hanging baskets. In the right conditions, you could fill a fruit bowl in weeks.

Some of the easiest fruit flowers to grow include:

  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Apples
  • Blackberries
  • Figs
  • Currants
  • Honey berries
  • Goji berries

Raspberries

Plant your raspberries in February for best results. They can either be planted in containers or in clumps around the garden. Raspberries are self-supporting, sturdy and low maintenance.

Strawberries

Plant our strawberries in June or July for best results. Strawberries are versatile and can be grown in window boxes or containers, strawberries may also be planted straight into the ground.

Blueberries

Blueberries take about three years to fruit, so get on planting right away. Blueberries are a low maintenance fruit flower that can easily be planted in containers or hanging baskets. Blueberries offer beautiful scents in Spring.

Apples

Apple trees are more versatile than you may think, you don’t need a large garden for your apple tree to thrive. Dwarf apple tree varieties can be planted in pots while larger trees can be planted where there is more space in the garden. Bonus points for planting two apple trees near to one-another, this gets you more bang for your buck as they will pollinate one another.

Blackberries

Blackberries are a wonderful addition to your garden and the beauty of the blackberry is that they don’t need special environments to grow, this is proven in the fact that many blackberry varieties can be found growing on the side of the road in thorny bunches. Plant your blackberry seeds away from other flowers to avoid the thorny bush overtaking your other flowers, and consider an apache variety if you would like to avoid the risk of getting scraped altogether!

Figs

Figs work best in containers so they’re great for smaller to medium sized gardens. For figs to thrive, you will need a relatively warm and sunshine friendly area for best results. Plant in Autumn to enjoy the following Summer. You won’t regret waiting for your own home-grown figs!

Currants

Blackcurrants, red currants and white currants grow well in containers and make for aesthetically pleasing and tasty addition to your garden. Currants do well in cool, dry climates and should be planted in Autumn to early Winter to ensure that the roots have enough time to embed in the soil.

Honey berries

Plant your honey berries in Spring for best results. Honey berries are filled with anti-oxidants. They’re sturdy and don’t require too much pampering other than morning sun and afternoon shade.

Goji berries

Goji berries grow best in with full access to the sun, it takes 2-4 years for fruit to grow after planting but the anti-oxidants are worth the wait.

3 top tips for growing fruit flowers

  1. Understand that there is no one size fits all approach! Each fruit flower requires different environments to thrive, make sure you understand what your fruit flower needs to continue growing.
  2. Get rid of loose ends! Read: pruning! Pruning plants simply means cleaning the foliage of the plant so that what is left behind, will spend the time focusing its energy on the remaining growth.
  3. Feed your plants molasses. Body builders use carbohydrates and protein to build muscle, your plants also need energy to continue thriving.
